Yunnan: 8-Day Discovery Tour of Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La

Fly to Kunming; you will be greeted with fresh flowers upon arrival. Then transfer to your hotel by car — free time for leisure afterward.

After breakfast, take the bullet train to Dali. Then visit Ideal State (Santorini – style scenic area, including one – way electric cart ride + afternoon tea), Erhai Ecological Corridor, Xizhou Ancient Town (ride the Xizhou Mini Train), and Dali Ancient City + Foreigner Street.

As the retro mini – train winds across the countryside, the train’s rumble, the caressing breeze, the majestic Cangshan, emerald rice fields, and ancient architecture blend into a serene escape. Let nature soothe your mind on this nostalgic journey.
Dali Ancient City is located at the foot of Cangshan Mountain. It boasts a unique Bai ethnic historical culture and is also a filming location for the TV drama Meet Yourself.
The Foreigner Street integrates traditional Bai ethnic architecture with modern Western elements. Walking along this “special street”, one can feel the unique Bai architectural culture and learn about its history and culture.

After breakfast, drive to Lugu Lake. Visit the Scenic Viewpoint, take a bus for a lake – circling tour, experience a Mosuo family visit and a bonfire party, and check into your hotel afterward.

Lugu Lake is an alpine lake, renowned for its charming scenery and unique Mosuo culture.
The Pig – Trough Boat, a traditional Mosuo boat also known as “Rigu” in the Mosuo language, is made by hollowing out a thick log and tapering both ends. Shaped like a long pig trough, it earns its name and is a popular tourist boat for exploring Lugu Lake.
As young Mosuo men and women break into cheerful dances, step into the crowd to soak up the vibrant energy of the Mosuo Bonfire Party. Savor the heartfelt warmth of the Mosuo families, sing the Lugu Lake Love Ballads in unison, and let loose in joyful dancing.

Watch the sunrise in the early morning. Take a wooden trough boat to cruise the lake and climb Lige Bi Island. In the afternoon, drive to Lijiang and explore Lijiang Ancient City + Sifang Square.

The Old Town of Lijiang is renowned for not having city walls. Visit the Naxi architecture featuring small bridges, flowing water and residential houses.
Sifang Street is a square plaza of several hundred square meters, known as the “heart of Lijiang Ancient City”. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Sifang Street was a commercial and trade hub in northwestern Yunnan and a distribution center for goods on the Ancient Tea – Horse Road. Paved with colorful stones, it slopes from west to east and is situated between the West River and the Middle River of Lijiang Ancient City. There is a custom of releasing water to wash the street. Standing on Sifang Street, four main streets radiate in all directions, and each street branches into many small alleys. The streets and alleys are connected and extend in all directions, allowing one to reach every corner of the ancient city.

After breakfast, head to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Scenic Area: Glacier Park Grand Cableway + Environmental Protection Bus + Blue Moon Valley (including electric cart ride) + Impression Lijiang live performance, and Ganhaizi Grassland. In the afternoon, visit Yushu Village.

The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is not only a treasure of natural landscapes but also a symbol of Naxi culture. As the sacred mountain in the hearts of the Naxi people, the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain embodies rich cultural connotations and folk customs.
Jade Water Village is one of the main sources of the river water in Lijiang Ancient City. It focuses on water culture and has clear and cold natural water.

After breakfast, visit Tiger Leaping Gorge and enjoy a distant view of the First Bend of the Yangtze River. Then drive to Shangri – La to explore Dukezong Ancient Town, the world’s largest Prayer Wheel and Guishan Park.

Tiger Leaping Gorge, with a vertical drop of over 3,900 meters, is one of the deepest gorges in the world. The river surges through the gorge, presenting a spectacular scene of dramatic grandeur, peril, and power.
Dukezong Ancient Town is China’s largest and best-preserved cluster of Tibetan dwellings. Historically, it was an indispensable key town on the Yunnan-Tibet Ancient Tea-Horse Road, and remains a must-pass hub on today’s Yunnan-Tibet Highway. It is also a renowned historical and cultural city in Yunnan Province. Guishan Park is home to the world’s largest prayer wheel, which stands roughly as tall as a 5-storey building. The wheel’s body is made of pure copper covered with a gold plating. Rotating it three full circles is believed to ward off disasters, invoke blessings and bring good fortune.

After breakfast, visit Songzanlin Monastery. Enjoy coffee on Napahai Grassland. Then take the bullet train back to Kunming.

The Songzanlin Monastery, known as the “Little Potala Palace”, is the most important temple of Tibetan Buddhism in Yunnan.
Napa Lake in Tibetan is called “Napatso”, which means “the lake behind the forest”. The ecological environment here is very unique.

After breakfast, take a leisurely stroll around Golden Horse – Jade Rooster Archway, Jinri Building, and East & West Pagodas. Then transfer to the airport for your return flight home.

The Kunming Old Street is a “witness” to Kunming’s history. With its unique architectural styles, bustling hustle and bustle, and diverse photo – worthy buildings, it embodies the distinctive features of the old Kunming and allows people to get a glimpse of Kunming’s cultural and historical elegance.
The Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Archways, as a landmark building in Kunming, not only carry a profound historical and cultural heritage but also embody rich myths, legends, and cultural traditions.
